Every age, and every culture has its heroes. In some times and places the heroes have been gods or god-like creatures from mythology, or mortals apparently much above the mass of humanity. But today,sports stars, film stars, and political leaders with clay feet have replaced Ram, Achilles, Cleopatra, and Alexander. In fact there are almost no heroes of any age that can withstand our tendency to debunk. There are figures who will always be in the history books, but they won't always be regarded as heroes.

這是2008年10月的SAT考題，筆者的一名學(xué)生憑這篇作文一舉拿下滿分12分。

主謂一致的一個(gè)難點(diǎn)在于，雖然英文中有些名詞看上去是復(fù)數(shù)，但謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞要采用單數(shù)；而有些名詞看上去是單數(shù)，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞卻要采用復(fù)數(shù)形式。有些名詞在表達(dá)不同意思時(shí)，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞要根據(jù)其意思采用單數(shù)或復(fù)數(shù)形式。這個(gè)問(wèn)題，在英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)法中的相關(guān)規(guī)則很多，此處只列舉SAT可能會(huì)考到的知識(shí)點(diǎn)：

\"Well, my goodness!\" exclaimed the third woman. \"I\'m certainly glad I don\'t have any problems like that\" -- and she knocked on wood. \"Oh,\" she said, standing up out of her chair. \"there\'s someone at the door.\"

對(duì)于這樣的文章，結(jié)尾段要非常注意，因?yàn)橐晃蹲C反，會(huì)讓人覺(jué)得過(guò)于咄咄逼人，因此往往在最后一段進(jìn)行平衡�！癆 loyal friend will probably tell you the truth when you need to hear it. But what is perhaps more important to many people is that a loyal friend also knows just how and when to lie.”文章結(jié)尾的兩個(gè)句子，雖然表達(dá)的是同一個(gè)意思，但看起來(lái)卻是再一次從正反兩個(gè)方面有力地說(shuō)明“聰明的朋友知道何時(shí)說(shuō)真話，何時(shí)說(shuō)假話”。

中文的作文喜歡以“理”服人，但西方的慣例是讓事實(shí)說(shuō)話，所謂的Facts are more eloquent than lips（事實(shí)勝于雄辯）。
